'Making art, for me, has always been about observation. However, I don’t think observation necessarily equals representation. My own experience has been that observation opens up one’s imagination; it opens up possibilities to see more than can be seen. Making art, in that sense, is like getting to know a person. It is only when we relate to them and spend time with them that we really see them. Someone who seems strikingly handsome can become dull and someone who at first glance is unremarkable can become enchanting.
Things that are seen open windows to the unseen
Through making art, when I engage with the things of this world, I sense that there is far more than superficial appearance; that we are only scratching the surface. In this exhibition there is a mixture of figurative and still life paintings. My creative process has resulted in a group of colourful works with rich surfaces and intriguing narratives. As with all of my work, these paintings require time. They are not quickly seen, but demand engagement and patience on the viewers’ part. As with the subjects they depict, the more one looks, the more one sees.'
